A new year has begun, and the inevitable New Year’s resolutions to eat healthier and exercise more have been made. But perhaps the nutritional health of frail loved ones has been overlooked. One does not need to be starving to be malnourished, because more food does not always mean nourishing food. All of us at Freedom Home Care hope to raise awareness and offer helpful nutrition information for seniors. The challenge for the elderly is to meet the same nutrient needs as when they were younger, yet consume fewer calories. An older adult’s diet should include protein, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins C, D, E and B12, calcium, zinc and folate. Our caring staff at Home Care can cook nutritious meals in the comfort of the home. Leftover meats and vegetables can be combined into one-dish casseroles to be easily reheated or frozen for later use. Additionally, we can be hired to provide shopping assistance. Ensuring that a loved one is eating enough nutritious foods and drinking enough fluids is a challenge. For more information about the nutritional needs of the elderly, or for a nutritional screening form, please contact Freedom Home Care in Dothan, Alabama at 334-803-8078 or Opelika, Alabama at 334-745-7308. Freedom Home Care also has offices in Columbus, Georgia and Montgomery, Alabama. |
